MICHELLE BUHL-NIELSENBiographyFinally settling in Winchester, England, Michelle Buhl-Nielsen made Denmark her base for twenty years and during this time also lived in Zimbabwe and South Africa. Being both a Graphic Designer and Artist gave Michelle the opportunity to work where-ever she was based, and in such diverse and exciting areas such as television, commercials, product packaging, children’s book illustrations, corporate identities, and web design. Throughout this time her paintings have always run parallel and she has exhibited and sold paintings in England, Denmark and Africa. It is Michelle’s travels in Africa that still continue to be a strong source of inspiration for her, and it is the warm light that she encountered whilst there that have always been central to her work. “I am captivated by the vibrancy and brightness of colour that a strong sun allows, contrasted with the darkness of the human form. My figures are created from a black background, only using colour in the spaces that surround them, like working in negative. My paintings are in acrylic, applied to thick blocks of board, often taking the images to the very edge of the board, cropping them to create an intensity of focus, and an intimacy with the viewer”. |
